In another ARIC study that examined the relevance of CIMT and cerebrovascular disease over an average of 7.2 years, ischemic cerebrovascular disease was 1.78 times more prevalent in males and 2.02 times more prevalent in females with a CIMT greater than 1 mm compared to that of those with a CIMT less than 1 mm. Coronary heart disease was 1.85 times more prevalent in males and 5.07 times more prevalent in females who had a CIMT greater than 1 mm compared to those with a CIMT less than 1 mm. The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study examined CIMT in 5,552 males and 7,289 females, ages 45 to 64, followed for an average of 5.2 years between 19. Therefore, a multiple regression analysis confirmed age and gender affecting 10-year stroke risk ( Table 3).ĬIMT increases from the onset of atherosclerosis. The 10-year stroke risk was treated as a dependent variable, age, gender, and CIMT were treated as independent variables. Therefore, a multiple regression analysis confirmed age, gender, CIMT and BaPWV independently affect 10-year CHD. CIMT, FMD, BaPWV, age, and gender values were treated as independent variables, and 10-year CHD risk was treated as a dependent variable. After adjusting for age, there was a significant correlation between the 10-year CHD risk and CIMT ( P<0.001), FMD ( P<0.017), and BaPWV ( P<0.035) and a significant correlation between the 10-year stroke risk and CIMT ( P<0.001) ( Table 2). In addition, age was significantly correlated with the all four vascular tests. The 10-year CHD and 10-year stroke risks both increased with age ( Fig. However, there was no correlation with AI 75. Prior to adjusting for age, the 10-year CHD risk and 10-year stroke risk were significantly correlated with FMD, BaPWV, and CIMT. Because of few atrial fibrillation patients, there was a difference between 10-year CHD risk and 10-year stroke risk in the present study. With these mean values, the 10-year stroke risk calculated using the UKPDS risk engine, in a male patient with and without a history of atrial fibrillation was 16.7% and 2.1%, respectively, which shows that atrial fibrillation has a large effect on the 10-year stroke risk. The mean values of study population were 50 years old, smoker, a systolic blood pressure of 130 mm Hg, glycated hemoglobin of 8.64%, total cholesterol of 200 mg/dL, and HDL-C of 45 mg/dL. The 10-year stroke risk was lower than 10-year CHD risk because there were only 3 patients with atrial fibrillation in this study. In the entire participants in the study, the 10-year CHD risk and 10-year stroke risk calculated using the UKPDS risk engine were 14.92% and 4.03%, respectively. For baseline diameter, the measurements were calculated as percentages, and a flow mediated response was observed. ![]() We then repositioned the transducer, and within the 50 seconds during which hyperemia sets in, we measured the maximum diameter of the brachial artery increased due to hyperemia. After 5 minutes, we reduced the pressure on the cuff to 0 mm Hg and then removed the cuff. ![]() After baseline diameter measurements were completed, the transducer was removed, and a blood pressure cuff was attached to the middle of the upper arm and set at 250 mm Hg. In order to reduce variation during diameter measurements, it was measured at arterial branching points and at the end of the diastolic phase just before the origin of an R wave using electrocardiogram (ECG). Under B-mode, the diameter was defined from one side of the interface (m-line) of the intima and media of the blood vessel to the same part on the opposite side. A linear transducer was located 5 to 10 cm above the antecubital fossa, and the center of the brachial artery was set as a reference point. Participants were stabilized in supine position, and the baseline diameter of the brachial artery was measured using a high-resolution B-mode ultrasonograph. ![]()

The objective of dominoes is generally to score the most points, by putting your tiles down in the most advantageous way, although some versions are won by the first player to put down all of their tiles. Players place tiles on the table in turn, matching one face of the domino with an open face of one that has already been played. Larger sets are made, featuring more pips, to enable more players to take part, but we will focus on the standard 28-tile dominoes set here. I talked to the owner a few times and decided to put a deposit down on it sight unseen. I was just looking for something to race and this car came up on Craigslist in South Dakota. ![]() “I did a Google search for a Hemi Dart because that was one of my dad’s favorite cars. That decision set a whole new series of events in motion that would eventually lead to Mike picking up his current 1968 Nostalgia Super Stock Dart. Mike’s son agreed, but just like his father and grandfather, he wanted to race something, so he informed his dad he would need a car to exercise his competitive itch. Eventually, his son turned pro and was racing a lot, but he was also getting hurt, so Mike urged him to stop racing dirt bikes. After about a year of racing the car, Mike just couldn’t do it anymore because it wasn’t the same without his dad.Ībout this time Mike’s son decided to begin his own racing adventure in the world of motocross. Mike had spent nearly everything he had to purchase a car to race in the class along with a Pro Stock Hemi engine. At the time, Mike was racing in Competition Eliminator because that’s what his dad always wanted to do. Mike went on to race with his father for many years, however, Bob passed away in 2004, and that left him at a crossroads with his racing. The car was totally torn down to a bare chassis and was prepared for drag racing duties with a new engine, full roll cage, and other parts. So, the Cuda was replaced with a 1970 Dodge Challenger and the pair got to work on the new-to-them Mopar. ![]() Mike’s dad was totally onboard with him racing and even had an idea: sell the ‘Cuda and buy something they could turn into a racecar. When Mike found out his dad was at the track he was expecting some form of punishment for lying, but the exact opposite happened much to his surprise. The next weekend after he asked me he showed up to the track without saying anything and watched me race from the stands,” Mike says. Eventually, he asked me if I was going to the track and I told him no, of course. I started racing at the track and my dad found out that I was sneaking off so I could race my 1970 440 six pack Cuda at the drag strip. We finally lined up one day and raced, I was hooked after that…and yes, I beat him. “I had a friend that was constantly hounding me when I was 16 to race him. Mike’s parents barnstormed across the state of Ohio racing as much as they could, but soon their growing family needed attention and it was time to take a break from the track.Īnd while you can take the racer away from the track, but you can’t remove the racing from their soul, and that was clearly passed on to Mike. How does drag racing fit into all of this for Mike? Well, that can also be traced back to not only his father, but his mother, as well. You couldn’t go to a Chevy dealership and get a car that had pizzazz, but you could go to a Dodge dealer and get a car with so many different options,” Mike explains. The colors of the cars, the body lines, and the themes they had for the vehicles got my attention, they just had personalities that I liked. When I was growing up nobody was out there really pounding on them because the parts were just too expensive versus a Chevy or Ford. “What is it that I like about the Mopar brand? Well, the Mopars are the odd man out in racing. So, it shouldn’t be any surprise that he’s running a stunning HEMI-powered 1968 Dart in the NMCA’s Nostalgia Super Stock class. To Mike, Chevy and Ford just never offered any cars that really grabbed his interest. His dad always owned Mopar performance vehicles, so Mike really didn’t see the need to stray far from what his family had always known. Mike’s exposure to classic Mopar muscle came from his father, Bob, who worked for Chrysler back in the 1960s and 70s. The Mopar brand has been the automotive focus for the entire Schaefer family for decades and that focus isn’t going to change anytime soon, if you ask Mike. Mike Schaefer isn’t one of those people, especially when it comes to the kind of car he enjoys….it’s Mopar or no car for him, 365 days a year. Madonna, along with co-producers Andre Betts and Shep Pettibone, tamps down every opportunity to let loose - moments ripe for a crescendo, a soaring instrumental break, a chance for the listener to dance along, are over the instant they are heard. Its cold, remote sound systematically undoes every one of the singer’s intimate promises.Ĭlinical enough on its own terms when compared with the lushness and romanticism of Madonna’s past grooves, Erotica is stunningly reined in even when it achieves disco greatness, it’s never heady. It succeeds in a way the innocent post-punk diva of Madonna and the thoughtful songwriter of Like a Prayer could not have imagined. The production choices suggest not a celebration of the physical but a critique of commercial representations of sex - whether Paul Verhoeven’s, Bruce Weber’s or Madonna’s - that by definition should not be mistaken for the real thing. Moving claustrophobically within the schematic confines of dominance and submission, Erotica plays out its fantasies with astringent aloofness, unhumid and uninviting. Then I asked, "What do you think the message or big idea was in this film?" They shared lots of thoughts, and I noted the common ideas the group came up, which were love and hope. After their first viewing, I asked them to share what they noticed about the film. The first time was simply to enjoy the story. For this lesson, my students watched the film twice. I then share common themes found in stories, such as, perseverance, family, friendship, hope, honesty, self determination, courage, etc. I describe theme as the heart of the story. One of my absolute favorite lessons to teach is "theme." Last year, my fifth graders were having trouble grasping the concept, so I searched for a good short film to visually "show" them theme, and I found the perfect one! Learning what the skill looks like visually, and practicing with a media kids are already familiar with, is an effective first step in students applying the skill to their reading. Just about ANY reading skill can be taught with shorts: making connections, asking questions, sequencing, predictions, drawing conclusions, plot, character development, theme, and this list goes on and on! Which reading skills can be taught using shorts? You don't want any unexpected surprises! Also, sometimes there is an advertisement to get through at the beginning, so I always set it up beforehand, that way it's all ready to go for the lesson. Be careful to always view films before showing them in class. My go to place to find great shorts is YouTube. My students, regardless of their level of language proficiency, "get" the lesson more easily because the shorts are visual. Most shorts do not have dialogue, they're all action. Show a short film and students are engaged! Visual learners and students who typically struggle with reading comprehension, including English language learners (ELLs), have greater success practicing comprehension skills with shorts. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then play back your recording of the click, with Mixbus's internal click still engaged, and determine whether any objectionable offset is heard. To determine the quality of your system calibration, you can enable the 'click' (metronome), and re-record it to a track in Mixbus (to do this, you should use a wire connection from your soundcard output, back into your soundcard's input). ![]() And this calibration should be tested regularly to make sure it is still valid. So only the most demanding technical tasks should require using the latency-calibration tool. ![]() Future overdubs on these main rhythm tracks, even if they are individually delayed by 1-4 ms, will not affect the overall timing or "feel" of a performance. So you can't guarantee that the latency is always valid.Īs long as the basic rhythm tracks were recorded together, this is very unlikely to cause a problem. PCI, Thunderbolt, and Firewire-based systems should not have this problem, but we don't know the internal operation of every motherboard, driver, firewire stack, and external device. In this case, you'd have to recalibrate every time you launch Mixbus. In practice, most users do not calibrate the system as the hardware conversion latency is typically only 1-4 ms.įurthermore, in semi-pro USB-based systems, this value can change with each launch of Mixbus, due to the internal motherboard USB stack. If the polarity is not preserved, then Mixbus will think there has been a "very long delay" from the output to the input, and this can result in nonsensical values from the calibration. Some devices internally flip the polarity between the input and output (which is an indication of lax testing, but probably not a problem in regular recording usage). It is very important that your polarity of the wiring between your device's output and input is preserved. The "calibrate audio" feature works by sending a complicated mix of low, mid, and high tones through your I/O device's output, and then using the frequency content of the tones to determine, with great accuracy, how long it takes for the signal to be sent & received by your device. Once measured, Mixbus should use this value to further refine the placement of recorded audio regions to match "what you heard". The "calibrate audio" feature (near the bottom of the Audio setup Window) is intended to measure these delays. When that happens, we have to measure the latency by sending a signal through the D/A, and returning it to an A/D. Sometimes the hardware latency introduced by your A/D and D/A hardware isn't reported correctly to Mixbus. If Mixbus is provided your hardware's inherent delays, the soundcard buffer size, and the latency of all plugins etc, then Mixbus should be able to place the audio correctly with "what you heard while you were playing". Particularly when you are adding new tracks to an existing recording, or "overdubbing" on parts of the existing recording, you want the timing to match the previously-recorded material. The value of this adjustment is the recording-offset latency, and Mixbus should manage this for you "automatically". When you finish a recording, Mixbus has to place the newly recorded region so it aligns correctly with the existing audio in the session. When you record audio into a computer, there are inherent delays caused by the conversion and buffering inside your audio system. Soundcard calibration + recording latency ![]() ![]() Hyperboles are used to express how the meaning of the poem is how power is not eternal. Now that we've seen how personification contributes to the meaning of the poem, let's look at hyperboles affect it. The 'shattered visage 'shows how this once feared figure is destroyed and has power no more. The frown, wrinkled lip, and sneer of the statue give life to this. Ozymandias was feared by many and most likely prideful and arrogant because of this. Now a statue can't actually wrinkle its lips and sneer, but the personification of this is used to show the loss of power. The line ' a shattered visage lies, whose frown, and wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,' (4 and 5) also show how Shelly creates the poems definition of power being able to expire. This shows how power that may be there now does not always last. These two 'legs' that were once whole and strong are now 'trunkless' or broken. ![]() Stone can be associated with something strong. This is used to portray how power does not last forever because of the stone. This is an example of personification because it is giving the qualities of legs and standing to the lifeless object of stone. An example of this can be seen in the line ' two trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert' (lines 2 and 3). ![]() Shelly uses personification to help portray this theme of 'power' and it not lasting forever. ![]() This can be seen throughout the poem through personification, hyperbole, and irony.
